Non-smoking restaurants and cafes in Kyoto

Japan tightened indoor-smoking rules in 2020; most restaurants are non-smoking, with designated smoking rooms still permitted in some venues. Kyoto is an inland city in the Kansai region, the former imperial capital of Japan, known for its preserved historic districts and traditional cuisine. The main dining concentrations are in Pontocho, the narrow lantern-lit alley running parallel to the Kamo River between Sanjo and Shijo streets, lined with traditional restaurants and bars; the Gion district, particularly Hanamikoji Street, where kaiseki restaurants and tea houses sit alongside more accessible dining; and the Nishiki Market area, a covered market street near Shijo known as "Kyoto's kitchen." Kyoto cuisine (Kyo-ryori) places particular emphasis on tofu, pickled vegetables, and multi-course kaiseki meals, though ramen, izakayas, and modern cafes are also widely available.

The directory currently lists 218 verified non-smoking venues in Kyoto. Use the map to find them across Pontocho, Gion, and the city center.
