Non-smoking restaurants and cafes in Belgrade

Serbia restricts indoor smoking in public venues, but enforcement is uneven and many cafes still permit it. Belgrade is no exception: kafanas, the traditional Serbian tavern-style restaurants built around grilled meat, rakija, and live folk music, routinely allow smoking indoors, and enforcement in the capital is inconsistent. Non-smoking venues exist but require deliberate searching.

Belgrade is Serbia's capital, a large inland city on the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. Its cafe and restaurant culture is dense and deeply social. The main concentrations of cafes and restaurants are along Knez Mihailova, the central pedestrian street running through the old town, and in the Skadarlija cobblestone quarter, which is historically associated with kafanas. Savamala, a district along the Sava riverbank, has a higher concentration of newer bars and restaurants. During warmer months, splavovi — floating river bars and restaurants moored along the Sava — are a distinct feature of Belgrade's dining and nightlife geography.
